Karate is is a martial art developed in the Ryukyu Islands from indigenous fighting methods[1][2] and Chinese kenpō.[1][2] It is primarily a striking art using punching, kicking, knee and elbow strikes. Open-handed techniques, grappling, locks, restraints, throws, and vital point strikes are taught in some styles.[3] A karate practitioner is called a karateka.
